Our Work

The Partnership for Indonesia-New Zealand Geothermal Energy Development (PINZ) is committed to strengthening Indonesia’s geothermal sector through technical expertise, policy support, and workforce capacity building.

Components

Driving Geothermal Energy Development in Indonesia

Our structured approach focuses on three key components that drive progress in geothermal electricity generation, sustainable energy planning, and workforce development. Each component plays a critical role in addressing the advantages of geothermal energy, ensuring that geothermal power energy is efficiently harnessed, regulated, and expanded to support Indonesia’s renewable energy goals.

Sector policy, regulation and planning support

PINZ is providing technical inputs for geothermal sector planning, policy settings, regulations and standards.

PINZ has been actively providing technical assistance and support public hearing on geothermal policy updates, ensuring a collaborative approach to strengthen sustainable and inclusive growth in Indonesia’s geothermal development.

PINZ has also been supporting the development of the draft of minister regulation support to strengthen direct use of geothermal energy through technical assistance and provision of input based on the modelling analysis of direct use in New Zealand and the tariff scheme suitable for Indonesia.

Geothermal exploration and project preparation

Comitted to accelerating Indonesia’s geothermal development, PINZ will provide targeted geoscience support for progressing geothermal exploration projects and preparing geothermal power and direct use projects for commercial development.

Building on the success of Geo-INZ, throughout its first year of programme implementation PINZ ensures seamless transition to continue the efforts in accelerating geothermal development in Indonesia. PINZ has been contributed in improving data collection on geothermal potential resource, calculation of greenhouse gas emission reduction for direct geothermal utilisation and training and capacity building on exploration and utilisation for direct use.

The technical supports will continue throughout PINZ implementation to support Indonesia to maximise potential from its geothermal resources, enhance sustainable economic development and Indonesia’s ability to meet decarbonisation targets.

Increasing workforce skills and capacity

PINZ will facilitate vocational training courses for geothermal technicians and plant operators at selected Indonesian polytechnics, building on the success of previous support.

PINZ will also provide geothermal related short course training and group workshops delivered in Indonesia to address gaps and introduce new relevant subjects.

PINZ provides access to world-class New Zealand expertise and best practices, training and knowledge-sharing initiatives to equip the industry with insights to navigate the geothermal energy sector, enhancing the capacity for innovation and growth.

Together, these initiatives strengthen Indonesia’s geothermal workforce—fueling the nation’s bold energy transition and paving the way for a sustainable, resilient energy future.

Advancing Geothermal Energy for a Sustainable Future

By integrating policy expertise, exploration strategies, and workforce capacity building, PINZ is driving Indonesia’s geothermal sector forward. Our programme ensures that geothermal electricity remains a reliable, efficient, and renewable energy source, contributing to Indonesia’s clean energy transition.

Activities

Component-led geothermal technical support

PINZ will be delivered and managed through a local Programme Implementation Unit (PIU), based in Jakarta, and providing quality end-to-end programme management, monitoring, reporting and communication services for PINZ, as well as all stakeholder and relationship management functions.

The PIU will be responsible for delivering all component-led geothermal technical support to the Government of Indonesia Partners. This will involve subcontracting a panel of geothermal experts, who will provide the core technical capabilities.
