About PINZ

The Partnership for Indonesia-New Zealand Geothermal Energy Development (PINZ) is a collaborative initiative supporting the growth of Indonesia’s geothermal sector.

Strengthening the development and utilisation of geothermal energy

PINZ focuses on technical assistance, capacity building, and policy support to strengthen the development and utilisation of geothermal energy.

PINZ builds upon the longstanding partnership between New Zealand and Indonesia for over 50 years in the geothermal sector.

The journey began with geothermal exploration surveys in the early 1970s and exploration support of Indonesia’s first geothermal power plant, Kawah Kamojang, in 1983.

This long-standing collaboration leverages the unique strengths of both nations.

Indonesia possesses vast geothermal energy potential and skilled human capital, while New Zealand is recognised globally as the geothermal centre of excellence.

Over the decades, the partnership has nurtured human capital and advanced shared energy goals, including through the New Zealand Support for Technical Training in the Indonesia Geothermal Sector (NZSTIGS) launched in 2016 and the Acceleration of Geothermal Development in Indonesia Activity (Geo-INZ) implemented in 2018 through 2022.

Today, PINZ continues to solidify both nations’ commitment to accelerating geothermal development and advancing technical competency in the clean energy sector.

Working closely with government agencies, industry partners, and academic institutions, PINZ provides expertise to enhance geothermal development projects and support effective geothermal sector regulation.

The programme aims to contribute to sustainable energy development through targeted initiatives that improve how geothermal energy works in Indonesia.

PINZ ensures that geothermal energy is a renewable energy source that can play a key role in Indonesia’s energy landscape, supporting both policy frameworks and workforce development to advance the sector.
